The Impact of Gender Inequality on Economic Growth and Human Development in Indonesia
ABSTRACT
Indonesia has demonstrated consistent economic growth and human development progress over the past decade. Despite these advancements, gender inequality remains an obstacle, particularly in labor force participation, wage disparities, and educational attainment. This study investigates the impact of gender inequality on both economic growth and human development in Indonesia, addressing a gap in existing literature by analyzing both dimensions simultaneously. Utilizing nine years of panel data at the provincial and national levels, the research employs descriptive and Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) panel data regression analyses. The Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) growth rate, Human Development Index (HDI), and Gender Inequality Index (GII) serve as key indicators. The findings reveal a significant negative impact of GII on both GRDP growth rate and HDI. Regional disparities further underscore the influence of cultural and infrastructural factors, with Eastern Indonesia facing greater inequality. Improving maternal and adolescent health services, expanding girls’ access to quality education, increasing women’s political representation, and removing labor-market barriers are essential for lifting economic growth and human development outcomes.
